Sir Keir Starmer said, "As leader of the Labour Party, I’m focused on getting us into power." So focused that he didn't seem to mind how far right he took the party. He sacked frontbencher Sam Tarry for attending an RMT picket line and saying that workers should get pay rises in line with inflation, which you might have thought would be Labour policy.

In a bizarre rant, Tory leadership favourite Liz Truss declared: “We import two-thirds of our cheese. That is a disgrace.” And Truss's tax cut plans were branded “socialism” by her rival, former chancellor Rishi Sunak.

Tory leadership election special! Penny Mordaunt said she wanted to be prime minister from the age of nine and likened her campaign to Paul McCartney playing his old hits. Liz Truss had difficulty finding both the entrance and the exit at her campaign launch. And Tom Tugendhat never missed an opportunity to remind everyone he'd been in the military. Meanwhile, Labour leader Keir Starmer seemed to be trying to out-tory them, ruling out joining the single market "forever" and scrapping a pledge to end NHS private sector outsourcing.

Following a dramatic week for the government which saw 52 MP resignations, Boris Johnson resigned as leader of the Conservative party. But, in a classic having his cake and eating it move, Johnson said he would stay on as prime minister until a new party leader is elected in the autumn.

The Pretenderendum

When First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced a second independence referendum, the reaction from the unionist branch managers bordered on hysteria. Douglas Ross called it a 'pretend referendum' and said the Tories would boycott it. Previously, Murdo Fraser had inadvertently made an excellent case for independence. And Gordon Brown was wheeled out once again, for no apparent purpose.

POETIC LICENCE

When I was a teenager one of my art college classmates complained to a tutor, “All the important art movements have happened. Everything’s been done.” The tutor said, “They haven’t been done by you.” I guess this made a lasting impression on me.

The idea behind ‘Poetic Licence’ was to take existing images of eminent Scottish writers, lift them out of the age in which they were created and stylistically subvert them, sometimes in not very subtle ways. The intended effect is to jolt you out of any preconceived ideas of time. Why shouldn’t Robert Burns and Liz Lochhead be sitting together in a pub?

Looking at the original oil painting of Sir Walter Scott, young people especially might find it hard to see beyond the 19th century formal wear and the austere old master treatment. Remove these and they might wonder who he is. If that sounds shallow, anything to get young people interested in writers is my defence.

So enjoy being jolted. I’ll stop short of singing ‘My Way’.

After the Tories suffered two disastrous byelection results, party chairman Oliver Dowden resigned. At one of the counts the Conservative candidate locked herself in a room and refused to speak to the press. Boris Johnson was in Rwanda at the time and would remain abroad for another week. Meanwhile, in the midst of the biggest rail strike in 30 years, RMT union leader Mick Lynch was proving to be formidable in his handling of journalists and politicians.

After the Prime Minister's ethics advisor Lord Geidt resigned over the PM's "readiness to break the law", Boris Johnson looked into scrapping the role. Geidt was the second ethics adviser to quit under Johnson, who has only been PM for three years.

In her 96th year, The Queen celebrated her platinum jubilee with a 4-day public holiday. The Duke of York, having recently settled a sexual assault case, did not attend as it was reported he had tested positive for covid. In Scotland the jubilee resulted in growing calls to abolish the monarchy.
