Strange Days

In response to a Welsh minister, chancellor Jeremy Hunt referred to Westminster as "the English Government" before correcting himself with "the United Kingdom Government". The thoroughly gloomy budget he then set out received a muted response, even from the Tories, and a universal drubbing in the press. But one fiercely loyal minister, Scottish branch manager Douglas Ross, praised it highly.

Blue Musk

When Elon Musk took over Twitter, one of the first changes he made was to allow blue-tick verification for anyone who was willing to shell out $8 a month for the privilege. This resulted in a slew of hilarious 'verified' parody accounts, including one attributed to Nicola Sturgeon that had written to Douglas Ross saying he smelled of fish.

Make Me Prime Monster

Matt Hancock, who as Health Secretary during the lockdown period released hospital patients into care homes without making them take covid tests, is to publish a book called 'Pandemic Diaries'. He also signed up to be on 'I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here' despite supposedly being a sitting MP. Meanwhile Home Secretary Suella Braverman took a £3500-an-hour Chinook helicopter to visit a site that was all of 19 miles away. And you may have seen some TV show called 'Make Me Prime Minister'. The Monster Club

New prime minister Rishi Sunak reshuffled the cabinet, bringing back Michael Gove, Dominic Raab and, controversially, Suella Braverman, who had been forced to resign as Home Secretary just a week before. The conservatives also posted a video with a soundtrack which sounded like it was sampled from Gary Glitter's 'Rock'n'Roll part 2'. Twitter had a field day.

Lettuce Vote

In an article in the Economist, Prime Minister Liz Truss's term in office was compared to the shelf life of a lettuce. There was a growing number of voices from her own party calling for her resignation and chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng was replaced by Jeremy Hunt after just 38 days in the post.

Nation Infiltration

As polls showed the Conservatives were likely to be wiped out in Scotland, the cabinet continued to be thoroughly hideous and incompetent. Home Secretary Suella Braverman said it was her ‘dream’ and ‘obsession’ to see a flight take asylum seekers to Rwanda. 'Health Secretary' Therese Coffey was generally grotesque.

The Sound Of Silence

New Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng unleashed a mini-budget which included tax cuts for the rich. It had the effect of sinking the pound, crashing the mortgage market, pushing pensions to the brink and forcing a Bank of England bailout. Even the IMF urged the government to “re-evaluate” the package. Prime Minister Liz Truss did a series of disastrous radio interviews trying to defend it.

Labour’s Secret Weapon

Ahead of their autumn party conference in Liverpool, Labour revealed Gordon Brown's 'long-awaited' constitutional blueprint which called for, yes you guessed it, federalism. On the same day, Brown said "look at the small print; the Vow was actually delivered". In another non-surprise move, Labour were also said to be considering abolishing the House of Lords, something they've been promising to do for decades.

Blackout

Blackout

The Queen's funeral was planned for Monday September 19th. Businesses were falling over themselves trying to send out messages of grief and announcements of closures. It was clear that the day was going to be similar to Christmas, except that television was going to be hijacked. It was almost as if we would be forced to mourn.
