A Ferry Tale

P&O Ferries, emboldened by the lack of workers' rights post-brexit and the government's failure to support a 'fire and rehire' bill that would have outlawed such practices, sacked 800 British workers via a pre-recorded video and replaced them with cheaper agency workers. The message included the line, "Your final day of employment is today.” Meanwhile at the Scottish Conservative conference Stephen Kerr MSP had an embarrassing dental malfunction.

Having called for Boris Johnson's resignation, Douglas Ross then withdrew it in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. MSP Murdo Fraser said he fully supported the letter of no confidence, then said withdrawing it was "the right move".

These were comments made in the days immediately prior to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. George Galloway: "Y'all said Russia was about to invade Ukraine. I told you it wasn't. You were wrong. I was right. Again." Nigel Farage: "Putin doesn't want to invade Ukraine, he's trying to frighten the west." Boris Johnson: "The old concepts of fighting big tank battles on European land mass are over."

In a promotional leaflet headed 'The Liberal Democrats are Winning', it was claimed that Scottish branch manager Alex Cole-Hamilton was "the most popular party leader in Scotland". I have no idea how they arrived at such a conclusion but it was unlikely to have been based on any kind of reality.

The excuses for No 10 parties kept coming. An ally of the Prime Minister said that a birthday gathering for him was not premeditated and that he was simply "ambushed with a cake”. When the SNP's Westminster leader Ian Blackford said in parliament, "The impending National Insurance tax hike hangs like a guillotine while they eat cake”, Johnson replied, "I don’t know who has been eating more cake". Meanwhile the long-awaited Sue Gray report into partygate was held back when the Metropolitan Police said they would be investigating after all, and that it should therefore contain minimal reference to the more serious matters. No, I don't understand either.

Boris Johnson's excuses for partygate were wearing thin; the latest being that nobody told him he was at a party. The rebellion within his own side sparked a slew of recriminations and threats with reports of blackmail against those who refused to back him. Also this week US rocker Meatloaf died aged 74.

When Boris Johnson admitted having attended a No 10 drinks party during lockdown, his Scottish branch manager Douglas Ross called for his resignation. In response to this, Michael Gove said "he's in Elgin and the national Tory leader is in London", and Jacob Rees-Mogg said "Douglas Ross has always been a lightweight figure".
